Automotive Retainer Clip Inspection System
Challenge
In high-volume Retainer Clip manufacturing, manual inspection is both slow and error-prone. Traditional methods make it difficult to detect tiny defects such as surface inconsistencies, incorrect leg lengths, or improper gaps between parts. These issues not only affect product quality but also increase production costs due to rework and scrap. The client needed a machine vision–based automated inspection solution that could reliably detect defects at high speed while reducing dependency on human operators.
Solution
Unilogic Technologies developed a custom vision inspection system that automates the complete inspection process for clips. Powered by automated visual inspection technology, the system is capable of inspecting 180 clips per minute with consistent accuracy.
The process begins when clips are loaded into a pre-feeder and transferred to a stainless-steel bowl feeder. The feeder vibrates to guide clips along a spiral path before placing them on a conveyor. Nylon aligners ensure correct orientation before clips enter a glass disk, where part sensors trigger multiple high-resolution cameras.
Four area-scan cameras (top, side, angled side, and bottom views) capture detailed images of every clip. Using advanced machine vision algorithms, the software analyzes surface quality, dimensions, and structural parameters in real time.
-
Defective clips are rejected automatically into a collector bin.
-
Accepted clips are sorted into selection bins using air nozzles.
-
Misfed or misoriented or stuck clips are redirected into a rerun bin.
This vision system for manufacturing ensures high-speed and high-accuracy inspection with minimal human intervention.
